In 2021, the Bayerische Staatsoper (Bavarian State Opera) approached StreetCo’ to provide an LED screen designed for displaying background visuals and live retransmissions of camera feeds during performances.

The Bavarian State Opera (Bayerische Staatsoper in German) is one of Germany’s most prestigious opera companies, based in Munich. Its main venue is the National Theater of Munich, and its performances are accompanied by the renowned Bavarian State Orchestra.

In the middle of 2022, StreetCo was contacted by Soixante Circuits to collaborate on a corporate event held in Paris, specifically at the Galeries Eric Dupont.
Soixante Circuits is a creative studio that specializes in video content creation and offers immersive and innovative experiences. Their clients trust them with the management of their image, focusing on evolutionary designs of spaces, retail experiences, and the creation of innovative objects and events.Since 2008, Soixante Circuits has been deploying its expertise in custom, out-of-the-ordinary projects, making a name for itself in multidisciplinary development. Their ability to push boundaries has made them a leader in the creation of immersive and interactive client experiences, which have become increasingly popular in today’s market.
The event took place at Galeries Eric Dupont, a gallery founded 32 years ago by Éric Dupont. In the early 1990s, the gallery emerged as a significant space in Paris, showcasing young artists with a strong focus on formal research in pictorial expression.This collaboration was an opportunity to bring immersive technologies into an artistic and cultural venue, blending the worlds of art, innovation, and client engagement.

In early 2022, StreetCo’ was contracted by Histoiresde and Isegoria to collaborate on a rental LED screen project for Groupe Actual’s booth at the legendary solo sailing competition, Route du Rhum, which spans from Saint-Malo, France to Guadeloupe.

Following the Covid-19 crisis, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich sought to revitalize its image by investing in a high-end LED screen for its performances. This addition aimed to enhance visibility during key opera scenes and create a more immersive experience for spectators.

Munich, the capital of Bavaria, is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, featuring centuries-old architecture, numerous museums, and world-famous traditions such as Oktoberfest and its historic beer halls, including the Hofbräuhaus, established in 1589.

The opera’s grand reopening was scheduled for late 2021, with the creative team incorporating this new technology into multiple productions to elevate the audience experience.

Solution to install an Outdoor LED Wall

The initial concept was to install a curved LED screen mounted on a scissor lift, allowing it to rotate dynamically during performances.

To achieve this, we produced 18m² of Outdoor P6 angled LED screens, specifically designed to support these applications.

The LED panels are built for rental use, making them easy to assemble, dismantle, and transport across various productions and events. The modular design allows the screen to be set up flat, suspended, or curved, and reconfigured into multiple smaller screen setups for versatile staging.

With high-end specifications, this LED screen creates an immersive backdrop behind the actors, enhancing the visual experience for spectators. This innovation marks the early stages of virtual production setups, a cutting-edge trend shaping the future of live performances.

After studying the feasibility of the custom solution at length with the engineers at Street Communication, the team settled on a solution for an Outdoor LED Wall.

Professional flight cases were provided to enable the screens to be transported without any risk of getting damaged.

Challenge to optimize the visiblity

The main challenge was to optimize visibility for spectators during key opera scenes while also immersing the actors using a next-generation digital signage solution. This required a high-brightness, high-refresh-rate LED screen with scanning capabilities, adjustable screen size, and curvature—features that traditional LCD monitors or standard video walls cannot offer.

Another key challenge was designing a versatile installation system that allowed the screen to be suspended or positioned at elevated heights for optimal visibility. To achieve this, the solution needed to be adaptable for hanging installations or mounted on scissor lifts, enabling the screen to be raised as high as necessary to enhance the viewing experience.

Impact : Outdoor LED Wall

For the past three years, the Munich Opera has been the only opera house incorporating an LED screen into its productions—a decision that has significantly increased audience engagement and attendance.

This pioneering approach is now inspiring other cultural venues to integrate multi-functional digital signage, recognizing its potential to enhance performances and stage design.

The Bayerische Staatsoper continues to explore new ways to leverage this technology, unlocking endless creative possibilities with each production. Designed for long-term use, this LED screen is expected to remain a key element of their stage design for the next 7 to 10 years.
