Context / environment : LED Wall for the Montparnasse tower

The Montparnasse Tower, the tallest skyscraper in Europe, stands in the heart of Paris, near Montparnasse train station, offering an unparalleled panoramic view of the Eiffel Tower.

As the tower’s management and directors prepare for a long-awaited five-year renovation, they sought to create a memorable final experience for visitors before the temporary closure. To achieve this, they partnered with Magnicity and Timescope for a truly immersive project.

Recreating the Evolution of Paris

Timescope, known for its expertise in VR and immersive storytelling, had a clear vision for enhancing the visitor experience:

– A giant LED screen on the 56th floor
– A historical reconstruction of Paris over the centuries
– A seamless blend of past and present

Visitors will not only enjoy the breathtaking 360° view of today’s Paris through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows but will also be transported back in time through an immersive digital journey, experiencing the evolution of Paris from centuries ago.

This visionary project transforms Montparnasse Tower into a gateway between history and modernity, offering an unforgettable experience before its major renovation.

Solution to install a indoor LED Wall

Designing the Ultimate Immersive Experience

The objective was to cover an entire wall on the 56th floor of Montparnasse Tower with a high-resolution LED screen, maximizing its size while ensuring seamless integration into the space. Timescope identified the ideal location, and we began studying the best solutions for both the structural support and screen dimensions to cover as much of the wall as possible.

Technical Considerations & Product Selection

For this installation, we used our BNX Series 1.9 indoor LED panels, offering ultra-thin and highly durable display technology. Given that the installation is in a public space, where children may interact with the screen, we incorporated GOB (Glue on Board) technology—a protective layer over the LED panels to ensure maximum durability and resistance to physical contact.

Audio & Video Synchronization

Beyond the visual experience, the client requested on-site sound system integration, ensuring that audio and video were perfectly synchronized for full visitor immersion. Timescope took charge of the sound design, further enhancing the immersive storytelling of the display.

Advanced Video Processing for Versatility

To provide flexibility in content display, we integrated the VX1000 video processor from Novastar, allowing the Montparnasse Tower team to seamlessly switch from Timescope’s historical video to alternative content for corporate events, live broadcasts, and concerts.

Project Timeline
– Total lead time: 3.5 months

– 2 months for production

– 1.5 months for transportation

This project marks a groundbreaking fusion of history and technology, offering visitors a one-of-a-kind experience before the tower undergoes its major renovation.

Challenge to install last minute

Optimizing Space for a Seamless Installation

One of the key challenges was to maximize the available space while ensuring that the LED screen remained as slim as possible within the designated area. To achieve this, we developed a super-thin screen solution, minimizing the installation’s footprint without compromising performance.

Precision Design for a Perfect Fit

The wall dimensions allocated for the LED screen measured 5.89m (L) x 2.73m (H). To ensure optimal coverage, we designed a 5.5m (L) x 2.5m (H) LED display, totaling 14.375m² of screen area. This configuration left only 7cm of space on each side, ensuring a nearly edge-to-edge display for maximum visual impact.

The selected BNX Series 1.9 LED panels feature an ultra-slim 4cm thickness, allowing the installation to take up minimal space while maintaining high-end image quality and durability.

Innovative Support Structure

To complement the slim LED design, we partnered with Edbak, a specialist in professional mounting solutions, to engineer a custom support structure. The aluminum and steel plate structure was designed to be just 6cm thick, resulting in a total installation depth of less than 11cm (including both screen and structure).

For high-end installations like this, we only use professional-grade mounting structures, ensuring long-term stability, durability, and safety.
